Beaded Christmas Ornaments
By Lucy A. Fazely --- Copyright 1998

Large Snowflake: 2" x 3"
String of Small Snowflakes: approximately 1" x 3"

Requirements: (for about 12 ornaments)

three pieces of white-on-white fabrics, each 7" x 9"
3 oz. package of Beads-2-Fuse

Glue gun or tacky glue
White perle cotton
mylar template plastic
sharp pencil
clean, flat-bottomed bowl

Directions:
1. Make templates of ornament shapes and label each.
2. Heat iron to a cotton setting. Steam is optional.
3. Remove a paper liner from one side of each of the Steam-a-Seam 2 sheets. Save the removed paper liners to use as pressing cloths. Directions from the manufacturer suggest removing the side with the printing on it but it will work no matter which side you remove first. I generally remove the one that comes off easiest.
4. Lay the sticky side of the Steam-a-Seam 2 on right side of each of the white-on-white fabric pieces.
5. Very quickly, run the iron across the paper side of the Steam-a-Seam 2. Do not leave the iron on the fusible web or it will fuse the web and it will no longer be sticky.
6. Using a sharp pencil, trace the ornament shapes onto the paper liners attached to the fabric. For each large snowflake, you will need to draw two shapes. For each string of small snowflakes you will need to trace six shapes.
7. Cut our each shape. Fold large snowflake in half and cut a slit, then cut out the center star shape.
8. Remove paper lining on each piece. Pour beads into flat-bottomed bowl. Press the sticky side down in a bowl of the beads. Let excess beads fall off into bowl. If there are some bare spots you can lay the shape bead side up in the bowl, scoop up some beads and press them down onto the shape.
9. Place shapes, bead side up, on ironing board. Work with only a few pieces at a time, so you don't have to move the iron around. Place the reserved paper liners over the pieces to be fused. Using a small amount of pressure, press iron down on top of the pieces. Hold it in place for at least 20 seconds. Let cool slightly and press the fabric side for an additional 10 seconds. Press again if the web is not fully melted.
10. For each large snowflake, cut a piece of perle cotton 5" long. Using a glue gun or tacky glue, adhere the ends of the perle cotton on the fabric side of one piece. Adhere two pieces together with the beaded sides out. let cool or dry before using.
11. For each string of small snowflakes, cut a piece of perle cotton 6" long. Using a glue gun or tacky glue, adhere one end of the perle cotton on the fabric side of one piece. Leaving a small space between the pieces adhere the perle cotton to tow more shapes. Bring the other end of the perle cotton and adhere it to the top snowflake. Adhere three more shapes, fabric sides together. Let cool or dry before using.
