"Cuffed Pillowcase" (C) 2005
By Lucy A. Fazely & Michael L. Burns
Makes ONE pillowcase approximately 20" x 30"

This pillowcase looks great with a novely print and two coordinating prints or solids for the accent and cuff. All seams are enclosed so there will be no fraying - even with frequent washings!

Fabric Requirements: (Yardage based on 44" wide fabric and a 1/2" seam allowance.)

... 3/4 yard novelty print for main part of pillowcase
... 1/8 yard dark colored accent fabric for between the pillowcase and the cuff
... 3/8 yard medium valued fabric for cuff
... matching all purpose threads

Directions:
1. Trim the cut ends of the pillowcase fabric so they are straight.
2. From accent fabric cut a 3" x 44" strip. Fold accent strip in half lengthwise, right sides out, so it is 1-1/2" x 44" and press flat.
3. From cuff fabric cut an 11" x 44" strip.
4. Lay the pillow case fabric, right side up, on a clean work surface. Center the accent fabric along one cut edge of the pillowcase fabric, with raw edges matching along top edge.
5. Lay the cuff fabric, right side down, on the accent fabric with top edge even with the other raw edges. Stitch 1/2" from raw edges.
6. Press the cuff and accent away from the pillowcase so the seam is under the accent/cuff fabrics. Lay on ironing board. Fold the raw edge of the cuff to the wrong side 1/2". Fold the cuff down onto the wrong side of the pillowcase fabric so it covers the seam by about 1/4". Pin in place taking into consideration that you will be stitching near the seam so avoid pins in the stitching path.

7. From the right side of the pillowcase fabric, stitch "in the ditch" on the pillowcase fabric, just under the accent fabric.
8. Press the top of the cuff flat.
9. Top stitch the accent fabric to the cuff.
10. Trim all the selvages from the fabric so those edges are even. Fold in half right sides out and stitch bottom and side with a 1/4" seam allowance. Press these seams open.
11. Turn the pillowcase right sides in and press the seam flat with the stitching at the edge. Sew the bottom and side again with a 1/2" seam allowance encasing the first seam. This seam will be thick at the accent area—go slow and be careful not to break your needle.
12. Turn pillowcase right side out and press flat.
