Dear Lucy,

I had previously contacted you and asked for your permission to submit your Vortex design into the 2003 Hoffman Challenge. It was accepted and has been traveling the country. I would like to thank you for the idea/design. I added a few more hidden blocks, which are somewhat difficult to see on the picture. I called it "Fruit Salad".

Thank you.

Quilter's Vortex Pattern

Vortex
Dear Lucy,

When I saw your "Central Park" in The Quilter, July 2003, it took my breath away. I was overwhelmed. I immediately started my search for fabric.

I had emailed you in July or August regarding seam pressing directions. Your suggestion of personal preference was a key for me. I pressed the seams to the dark fabric for the first couple of blocks. Edges and seams didn't line-up too well. So I tried pressing the seams open. WOW! What a difference! When pressing the seams open, edges and seams line up much better, and the blocks lay more flat.

Back of Quilt

I did make a couple of changes to your pattern:

1. I added a 1"" piping (1/2" visible on quilt top) between the top and the border, pressed the seam to the border forcing the piping to lay on the quilt top

2. I cut my binding at 3" wide (instead of your 2-1/2"), sewed it to the top and turned it to the back. That 1/2" allowed me to machine stitch the binding in place on the back, catching the binding/border seam on the front.

3. Because the throat of my sewing machine is not wide enough for me to stipple a quilt of this size, I machine tied at 6 points within each block using a red variegated thread.

When it came time for the back, I wasn't quite sure what to do. I finally used leftover fabrics from the top and pieced it all together.

This quilt was originally intended to be a housewarming gift for a co-worker, but turned into a Christmas gift. The quilt was completed December 27, 2003 at 8:15, and presented to my co-worker at the company Christmas party on December 28, 2003.

Today, I sit back and relax a little before beginning my next project, I look at the pictures of this quilt and all sorts of color schemes run through my head. I have a feeling that I will be using this pattern quite a bit over the next few years.
thank you so much for the inspiration.

Thank you!

(NOTE: The quilt was named "Madden's Playground" and is owned by Scott Madden)
